Ronald Reagan’s would-be assassin John Hinckley to be released from prison

John Hinckley

It came as a shocking surprise, but John Hinckley, the man responsible for shooting former President Ronald Reagan in 1981, is set to be released from prison after 35 years.

Hinckley, who is now 61 years old, will be released from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington on August 5. He is reportedly going to go live with his 90-year-old mother in her gated community in Williamsburg, Virginia.

US District Judge Paul Friedman wrote in his ruling Wednesday that Hinckley “no longer poses a threat to himself or others.”

Hinckley hadn’t been exclusively confined to the hospital. In fact, he had been allowed to leave the hospital for day visits numerous times since 2003 and would typically spend 17 days a month at his mother’s home.

On March 30, 1981, Hinckley attempted to assassinate President Reagan and shot him in the chest outside the Washington Hilton. He also shot three others, including Reagan’s press secretary James Brady, who became disabled after the attack.

Reagan spent 12 days in the hospital.

After the attack, Hinckley told investigators that he was trying to kill President Reagan to impress actress Jodie Foster, who he was apparently obsessed with.

His release is not without controversy, obviously. Patti Davis, one of Reagan’s daughters, wrote a must-read blog post on her blog, where she talks about how haunted she is by her father’s shooting and how she doesn’t believe Hinckley is truly rehabilitated. Below are some excerpts:

For purposes of review, here are a few other things Hinckley was doing at Saint Elizabeths: Writing to mass murderers Ted Bundy and Charles Manson. Federal prosecutors reported this to the hospital doctors who didn’t know because they hadn’t wanted to invade Hinckley’s privacy by searching his room. He’s had several girlfriends, most notably Leslie deVeau who killed her 10 year old daughter with a 12 gauge semiautomatic shotgun while the girl slept, then tried to kill herself but only managed to shoot off her left arm.

When my father was lying in a hospital bed recovering from the gunshots that nearly killed him, he said, “I know my ability to heal depends on my willingness to forgive John Hinckley.” I too believe in forgiveness. But forgiving someone in your heart doesn’t mean that you let them loose in Virginia to pursue whatever dark agendas they may still hold dear.

Also, according to the New York Times, the Justice Department is reviewing the ruling.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department, which has consistently opposed Mr. Hinckley’s appeals for greater freedom, said it was reviewing the ruling. A spokeswoman for the Secret Service, which sometimes secretly follows Mr. Hinckley while he is on supervised release, said the agency would not comment.

After Hinckey is released in August, he won’t be completely free, at least not at first. He will have to attend individual and group therapy sessions, cannot talk to the media, and is limited as to how far he can drive.

But how would you feel if he was living in your community?

Reagan would-be assassin John Hinckley is set to be released from prison. How would you feel if he were living in your community?

Is the man charged with killing Sierah Joughin a serial killer?

    Sierah Joughin
    Sierah Joughin

If you haven’t been following the heart-breaking story of Sierah Joughin these last couple weeks, let me fill you in.

On July 19, 20-year-old University of Toledo student Sierah Joughin was out riding her bike in Metamora, about 20 miles west of Toledo. She was with her boyfriend at first and then the two parted ways. Sierah never made it home and she hasn’t been seen alive since. Her bike was found abandoned in a cornfield and a missing persons report was filed.

    James Worley
    James Worley

57-year-old James Worley was arrested three days later and charged with her abduction. Investigators at the time wouldn’t say what led them to Worley, only that they had “probable cause” to arrest him. Later that night, police said they had found Sierah’s remains in a shallow grave near a rural county road.

The University of Toledo released a statement about Sierah after the discovery was made:

On Tuesday, July 26, Worley was charged with Sierah’s murder.

And today, The Toledo Blade got their hands on search warrants that were executed during the search for Sierah. One revelation is that while searching Worley’s property, investigators found a hidden room in his barn that contained “a carpet-lined freezer with blood in it and restraints for holding people against their will.”

The room was obscured by hay bales and was locked from the outside by a “ratchet strap.”

    Also from the Blade:

The warrants also reveal evidence that Worley was a repeat abductor. Worley, the warrant states, told a therapist he was mandated to see by Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge after his previous abduction conviction that he “learned from each abduction he had done and the next one he was going to bury.”

Authorities found several pairs of women’s undergarments on his property.

The search warrants also describe his statements and actions during the time Ms. Joughin was missing.

According to statements in multiple search warrants, cell phone evidence showed he was at the scene where Ms. Joughin’s bike was found for two hours during the time she was missing.

When questioned by investigators, he told them that “he didn’t steal anything or kill anyone,” but had fresh marks on his arms and bruises on his lower legs.

Yes, you read that right. Worley had abducted someone before.

In 1990, he was charged with the abduction of a 26-year-old woman who was riding her bike in western Lucas County. He was convicted in November 1990, and was paroled in December 1993.

He’s been free since 1993. It will be interesting to see how many disappearances and murders will be connected to him.

I’ll keep updating as this case develops.

    RIP Sierah Joughin.

Prosecutors drop charges in Chandra Levy case, cite “unforeseen developments”

My mind is just blown with this one.

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia made a shocking announcement today in the Chandra Levy case. They are dismissing the case against Ingmar Guandique, concluding that “it can no longer prove the murder case against Mr. Guandique beyond a reasonable doubt.”

As you may recall, 24-year-old Chandra Levy was an intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, DC when she disappeared after going jogging in May 2001. Her disappearance attracted national attention after it was discovered that she had been having an affair with Gary Condit, a married Congressman. Her skeletal remains were found in Rock Creek Park in May 2002.

Condit was never named a suspect by police, but he remained under a cloud of suspicion with the public as the case went unsolved for years.

Condit gave an interview to Connie Chung on Primetime:

Then, in 2009, police arrested Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvadore, and charged him wth Chandra’s murder. He had been convicted for assaulting two other women in that same park around the same time as Chandra’s disappearance. Guandique was convicted of Chandra’s murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison.

In June 2015, Guandique was granted a new trial. The judge stated in that filing that prosecutors had failed to disclose that one of their main witnesses, a cell mate of Guandique’s who had testified that Guandique had confessed, had previous contact with prosecutors and may have been testifying in order to get a reduced sentence in his own case.

Then today, Judge Robert E. Morin issued an order to dismiss the case without prejudice after the US Attorney’s office said they will not move forward with a retrial, saying that “recent unforeseen developments that were investigated over the past week led to this decision.”

Guandique will be freed from prison but will be transferred to the custody of immigration agents, who will seek to have him deported.

I have so many questions that I hope are answered in the following days. What were these “unforeseen developments” from the past week? Are they convinced of Guandique’s innocence or they just can’t prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt? Do they have another suspect in mind?

Washington Teen Allen Ivanov Kills Ex-Girlfriend and Two Friends

19-year-old Allen Ivanov was so distraught at seeing his ex-girlfriend with other guys, that he walked into a house party earlier this week and shot her and two others to death.

You know, something an absolute coward would do.

It was just after midnight early Sunday morning and the party was in Mukilteo, a small waterfront city in Snohomish County, Washington. Ivanov had broken up with his ex-girlfriend, Anna Bui, two months prior, but as he told investigators, she had been sending him Snapchats showing that she was moving on from their relationship, and he didn’t like it. Ivanov went to the party, sat in his car for a bit, then grabbed the AR-15 he had bought the week prior and crept around to the back of the home. He said he was approached by a male who saw him and he was “scared” so he shot the male. He said after firing the shot his adrenaline kicked in and so he went up the stairs, found Bui, and shot her twice, killing her. He then looked outside and saw another male running up to the house from the front yard. He reached out and shot at him too. He shot two more males from the upstairs balcony before realizing he was out of ammunition.

He walked back to his car, re-loaded the gun so he could go back and shoot some more, decided against it, and then drove away.

A neighbor reportedly took in around 15 people that night, as they fled for their lives from the shooting.

Two hours later, Ivanov was taken into custody about 100 miles away, on Interstate 5 in Lewis County. An “assault-type rifle” was lying next to him on his passenger seat.

Ivanov would later tell detectives that Bui was his “dream girl,” the first girl he had ever kissed, and that he regretted breaking up with her.

Ivanov and Bui were both students at the University of Washington in Bothell, which released a statement Sunday, following the shooting:

“Yesterday was a day of tremendous heartbreak for our community. One of the victims in the fatal shootings in Mukilteo was one of our students, Anna Bui. Our hearts go out to her family and friends for their terrible loss. The suspect who has been arrested is Allen Ivanov, also a UW Bothell student. There’s no doubt some of you know Anna or Allen, or both and will be devastated by this news. I implore you to counter violence with compassion.”

In addition to Bui, Jordan Ebner and Jake Long were also killed. All three were only 19 years old. Another teen, 18-year-old Will Kramer, was shot and is currently recovering in the hospital. He is expected to survive.

I thought about going into detail about who Allen Ivanov was because I do think it’s important to know that these killers can come in all shapes and sizes – and this kid wasn’t someone you would think could be a killer, just by looking at him or by reading his accomplishments. But I’m not going to go any further than saying just that, because I don’t think he deserves that. To be quite honest, none of what he did prior to taking the lives of three people matters. If you want to read more about him, you can check out his LinkedIn, or this Komo News article about him.

I will, however, discuss his cowardly actions.

Ivanov did leave a digital footprint prior to the shooting.

On his Twitter account, he had two tweets and the last one, which was posted at 1:51 AM on Friday, July 29, read, “What’s Ruger gonna think?” Many news outlets take this to mean that he was taking about his gun, which would mean he methodically planned this killing.

    Allen Ivanov Twitter

His Instagram is even more mortifying and egotistical. One of his last posts was a photo of a gun with three bullets beside it and the caption, “You can’t run with me.”

    Allen Ivanov Instagram

Komo News is reporting that someone from Kentucky told investigators that Ivanov had texted him about committing a mass shooting.

    Also from Komo News:

On Monday KOMO News obtained a note that Ivanov’s former attorney says was written by the suspect and given to him by Ivanov’s mother. It contains messages to family and friends, including several that mention “the next life.”

Instead of showing a nice picture of Ivanov, here’s one of him in court, decked out in his new outfit:

    Allen Ivanov

A more important question than who Allen Ivanov was, is who were his victims?

Anna Bui was a college student at the University of Washington in Bothell. She and Ivanov had dated for a little over a year, since high school. She spent the summer traveling around Europe, and when she came back, her friend told The Seattle Times that she was happy and felt like she didn’t need Ivanov anymore.

Her last post on Facebook reflected that sentiment:

    Anna Bui Facebook

Bui worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Caring Cabin Adult Family Home in Bothell on the weekends.

    Jake Long
    Jake Long

After graduating high school, Jake Long spent a year at the University of South Florida, but he had reportedly just returned home to be closer to his friends and family.

Long’s mother, Autumn Snider, spoke with the Seattle Times and said that her son was a kind soul and “was always there for people, and very devoted to his siblings.”

    Jordan Ebner
    Jordan Ebner

Jordan Ebner worked at an auto-detailing shop and was on track to go into aviation for his career. He was a “serious student with a funny side” according to his friends and family who spoke with reporters.

Ivanov appeared briefly in court yesterday and was ordered to be held without bail and to have no contact with the families of the victims. He is expected to be charged later today.

A memorial for the victims has been erected in their old high school parking lot.

    Natalie Henderson and Carter Davis

    ***Scroll down for updates***

The bodies of 17-year-olds Natalie Henderson of Roswell, and Carter Davis, of Woodstock, were found early Monday morning behind a Publix grocery store. A delivery driver came across the bodies shortly before 6 AM Monday.

Both Natalie and Carter had been shot in the head and both were found lying next to their cars. Roswell Police Detective Zachary Frommer said the manner of death in both cases was homicide and they believe that both teens were killed where the bodies were found.

Police told reporters that Natalie and Carter arrived at the shopping center between 2 AM – 4 AM. Their parents reportedly told officers that they believed the teens were still at home in bed.

How horribly shocking to think your kids are safe at home in their beds and then to find out they weren’t at home at all and had actually been murdered.

It seems like police have a pretty good idea of who may have been responsible. According to WSB-TV, the police report lists Natalie’s possible relationship to the offender as “XBG,” which is police shorthand for “ex-boyfriend.”

Just this morning, officers executed a search warrant on a home in an East Cobb neighborhood and a local reporter recorded them taking boxes out of the home and speaking with a young man who apparently lived there.

If this young man is Natalie’s ex-boyfriend, then this case could probably be reaching a resolution very shortly.

Natalie and Carter were both seniors at different high schools but they reportedly knew each other through mutual friends. It isn’t clear whether or not they were dating or just friends. Natalie attended Roswell High School and Carter attended River Ridge High.

RIP Natalie and Carter. Yet another senseless taking of two young lives.

I’ll keep updating this story as it develops.

    UPDATE: 8/3/16 3:32 PM CST

Investigators held a press conference this afternoon and announced the arrest of 20-year-old Jeffrey Hazelwood. He was taken into custody at about 5 AM this morning at a local gas station. He is expected to be charged with two counts of murder later today.

Police Chief Rusty Grant said they believe Hazelwood acted alone. They would not release a motive, saying that it is still an active investigation.

Surveillance video at the scene was helpful, but wasn’t critical info that led to his arrest.

Hazelwood has an Instagram account that he posted to after the murders.

    Jeff Hazelwood

    Jeff Hazelwood

He also posted a photo of his girlfriend (or perhaps his fiancee or wife) about 19 hours ago, but I’m not going to post that here since she seems to be an innocent victim in all this. He captioned the photo, “Getting things at Michaels for the wonderful art she makes! I love you, sweetheart!”

Which means that if he truly is the killer, he went about his day like nothing happened. Like he didn’t just take the lives of two innocent teenagers.

    Sick.

Hazelwood also has a Facebook page but it doesn’t look like he updated it much.

I can’t seem to find any connection yet, on social media anyway, between Hazelwood and Natalie or Carter.

30-year-old Karina Vetrano found dead after jogging in Queens

    Karina Vetrano

30-year-old Karina Vetrano left her home in Queens at 5 PM on August 3, 2016 to go jogging. She normally went with her dad Philip, a retired FDNY firefighter, but her dad didn’t join her this particular time due to a bad back.

When she didn’t return home by 7 PM and wasn’t answering any of his calls, Philip called a neighborhood friend in the NYPD and then called 911 to report her missing. He took the responding officers to the place where he and Karina typically went jogging in Howard Beach, and they came across her iPhone near a bike path. Philip then found her body, lying face down about 15 feet off the desolate path. She had been raped, beaten and strangled.

    Karina Vetrano

One of Karina’s sneakers and one of her ear buds were found about 60 feet from the scene, in opposite directions.

Police said Karina fought her attacker and bit him so hard that she cracked a tooth, but she couldn’t fight him off.

From the New York Daily News:

Police believe an attacker tore at the victim’s clothes during the killing, with the jogger suffering scratches on the lower part of her body and scrapes on both legs. Police sources said there was bruising to her buttocks and the backs of her upper thighs. There were signs of vaginal and anal trauma, the sources said. Her panties were pulled down below her buttocks, the sources said.

Police told reporters they recovered a useful DNA sample from Karina’s body, but that they haven’t been able to find a match yet. They said they have interviewed known sex offenders in the area, and do not believe Karina knew her attacker.

There have been reports that Karina had broken up with a boyfriend two days prior to her murder, but police have reportedly checked his alibi and cleared him.

Karina’s body was found about 14 blocks away from her parents’ home. Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told the NY Daily News that Philip had told Karina to not run down that particular path without him.

Her parents spoke at a press conference and Karina’s mother had some harsh words for her killer, calling him pathetic, puny, and a “weak piece of filth.”

Karina was a writer and had a blog, www.Karinavee.com, although she hadn’t updated it since 2014. She worked as a caterer at Vetro Lounge, and had a master’s degree from St. John’s University.

Karina’s friends told reporters that her two passions were writing and running. She had surgery on her legs when she was young and was told she might never run again – but she did. Her Instagram bio said she was a “thrill seeker” and a “day dreamer.”

Karina’s wake was held on Friday afternoon, with hundreds of people turning out to pay their respects.

Just last week, 30-year-old Karina Vetrano was murdered after going jogging in Queens. And now, only a little over a week later, another jogger has turned up dead, this time in Princeton, Massachusetts.

    Vanessa Marcotte
    Vanessa Marcotte, courtesy of Instagram

27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte was in Princeton visiting her family, when she left her family’s home at about 1 PM Sunday, August 8, to go jogging. When she didn’t return home, her family reported her missing.

Hours later, at about 8:20 PM, Vanessa’s body was found by a Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit in the woods about a half mile away. She reportedly was naked and had burns on her hands, feet and part of her head – investigators are investigating whether she may have been sexually assaulted and then set on fire.

Vanessa had been living in New York City and was working as an Account Manager at Google. Google released a statement yesterday, stating:

“Vanessa Marcotte was a much loved member of the Google team, working in our New York office for the last year and a half, and known for her ubiquitous smile, passion for volunteer work, and love of Boston sports. We are deeply shocked and saddened, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Princeton, by all accounts, appears to be a very safe area. Princeton Police Chief Michele Powers said this is the first homicide in Princeton in nearly 30 years.

Whether or not Vanessa and Karina’s murders are related remains to be seen. With seemingly different causes of death and being a considerable distance apart, I tend to think they aren’t, but it’s too soon to tell.

Anyone with information about Vanessa’s murder should call Massachusetts State Police at 508-453-7589.

The cause of death was ruled a skull fracture and the manner of death a homicide. Melissa Calusinski, a 22-year-old Teacher’s Assistant at the daycare, was charged and ultimately convicted of his murder. Years later, new evidence was discovered that shows Ben may not have died from a skull fracture after all, and that his death may not have been a homicide.

By all accounts, it’s unusual for family and friends to not have heard from 36-year-old Julie McCutcheon in more than a week. Yet that seems to be the case.

Julie’s missing persons poster states that she was last seen in the area of Bullfrog Road in Gettsyburg, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. She was house and pet sitting for a coworker, something she did often for family and friends.

Julie and her sister Rachel had plans to go to a horse show the following weekend, and on Friday morning, when Rachel couldn’t get ahold of her, she started to worry. She and other family members reached out to the owners of the house Julie had been watching, who sent their son over to the house to check on it. Julie’s family met him there. Inside the home, they found Julie’s full suitcase, cell phone and key rings. Julie’s wallet, car, and car key were missing.

The two dogs Julie had been watching had reportedly defecated and urinated numerous times throughout the house, making it seem as though they had been locked up for days.

Julie’s bank statements are also pretty alarming. On her computer, which she had left at her home in Greencastle, was an email from her bank, stating that her debit card had been suspended due to suspicious activity in Virginia and South Carolina.

It doesn’t look likely that Julie took off voluntarily. She and her sister had plans the following weekend, and she had reportedly purchased a new horse that was set to be delivered on Saturday – all things for her to look forward to. She was also reportedly an animal lover and I can’t think of any animal lover who would leave two dogs at home by themselves for days.

    Julie needs to be found.

She is 5’4″ tall, 180 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. If you have any information regarding her whereabouts, please call the Pennsylvania State Police at (717) 264-5161. Her car, which is also missing, is a grey 2009 Kia Sportage and has a PA license plate with the number JRW8897.

Disturbing Details Emerge in Natalie Henderson / Carter Davis Murders

    Jeffrey Hazelwood
    Jeffrey Hazelwood in court

In a preliminary hearing on August 19, 2016, disturbing new details came out about the murders of high school students Natalie Henderson and Carter Davis. You can read my prior post about this case HERE.

20-year-old Jeffrey Hazelwood, the man who reportedly confessed to the heinous murders, appeared in court last week for the preliminary hearing. I must warn you that the details that came out when Detective Jennifer Bennett testified on the stand, are pretty graphic.

For anyone who is unable to watch the video, below are some details:

    • A 911 call came in on the morning of August 1, from a grocery store delivery driver who saw two bodies on the ground next to a couple of vehicles behind the Publix grocery store.
    • Natalie had no clothing on; Carter was wearing black basketball shorts
    • Surveillance video showed one vehicle (allegedly belonging to Hazelwood) parking in the Publix side parking lot at about 3 AM, just before Natalie and Carter’s vehicles park in the back.
    • A male subject (allegedly Hazelwood) can be seen on camera observing the two vehicles. He is a white male with longer brown hair. He goes off camera and then can be seen coming back about an hour later (He allegedly went to a gas station at this point, using Natalie’s card). The actual shooting was not captured on surveillance.
    • Natalie and Carter’s families were on scene when Detective Bennett was there.
    • As the scene was being processed, Detective Bennett received info about a guy Natalie had been seeing on and off for the last few months and so she conducted an interview with him. He was cleared as a suspect.
    • The next day, police discovered that one of Natalie’s debit cards had been taken and had been used at a gas station in Woodstock shortly after the murders. Police obtained that surveillance footage and matched it with the vehicle on the surveillance at the grocery store. The suspect was wearing a (V for Vendetta) mask as he was pumping gas. The suspect had been wearing that same mask at the murder scene.
    • They were able to determine the suspect’s vehicle was a Honda Passport.
    • They did a GBI search of the vehicle type and matched it to Hazelwood’s grandfather. When they looked into the grandfather, they discovered that he had been having some issues with his grandson, who matched the description of the suspect.
    • They used his social media to link him to a female that lives in Cobb County. They went to that address and located the vehicle parked out front.
    • They watched the vehicle and they saw someone get into the car and drive to a local gas station. They followed the vehicle and observed the person exhibiting strange behavior – walking around the parking lot, changing his clothes, taking his shirt off. At that point, they detained him (Jeffrey Hazelwood)
    • Hazelwood was detained and search warrants were executed on his car and at the residence in Cobb County.
    • Inside the vehicle, they found a V for Vendetta mask, a small red gas can, a 9 MM firearm, and several other items.
    • A projectile was recovered at the crime scene that was consistent with the 9 MM firearm found in the car.
    • Detective Bennett interviewed Hazelwood. He told her initially that he was present during the incident and saw everything that occurred, except for who shot the victims.
    • He admitted going into the vehicle and taking items from them, including the debit card from Natalie’s vehicle.
    • She interviewed him the following day for a second time (on August 4). Hazelwood started off by saying he had driven someone else to the scene and that they instructed him to do the things he did to the victims. As the story progressed, he started to admit guilt and use the word “I.”
    • He admitted that when he originally saw the vehicles, he became curious as to why they were going behind the Publix. He followed them back there and said he watched them from behind an electrical box. He then said he climbed on top of the store and watched them from there.
    • Then he said he confronted them. He walked over to Natalie’s car and opened up the backseat door, where both of the teens were. He pointed the gun at them and told them to get out of the car.
    • He said there was an exchange between him and Carter and he hit Carter with the gun as he was getting out of the car. He said that he then became scared of Carter and shot him.
    • He ordered Natalie out of the car. He said she was wearing a shirt and underwear. He said he made her take her clothes off and then he sexually assaulted her with his fingers.
    • He said he made Natalie lean over the hood and he spanked her before shooting her in the head.
    • Detective Bennett attended the autopsy. Natalie had a gunshot wound to the top right of her head. Carter also died of a gunshot wound to the head.
    • Hazelwood told Bennett that he left the scene to go put gas in his car and in a gas can because he didn’t want to run out of gas. He also stole jumper cables from Carter’s car in case his car broke down.
    • Hazelwood never said why he did it. They have not been able to determine a specific motive.
    • It was clear that any shell casings at the scene had been picked up. They discovered writings in which Hazelwood describes wanting to be an assassin.
    • Cell phone records revealed that Hazelwood’s phone hit a tower near the Publix shortly before the homicide occurred.
    • Hazelwood said he stole the gun from his grandfather, whom he lived with until recently. His grandfather said he and his grandmother were afraid of Hazelwood.
    • On cross examination, Detective Bennett said Hazelwood gave her a few different accounts as to what he was doing prior to the shooting, but that he was at a Waffle House earlier.
    • Hazelwood is friends with a male subject that Carter knew from school.
    • Hazelwood was allegedly kicked out of his grandparents’ home.
    • At at the end of the first interview with Hazelwood, he requested an attorney like the ones he had seen on TV.
    • In the second interview, Hazelwood told Detective Bennett that someone named “Matt” had made him do it.
    • According to the defense attorney, Hazelwood is schizophrenic and is bi-polar. He also has sensory disorder and Asberger’s.
    • Hazelwood had spent time at a mental hospital.

At the point where Detective Bennett is describing Natalie’s murder, she breaks down on the stand and can be seen wiping tears away. She was the sole witness in the hearing.

The day prior to the hearing, the autopsy report was released, detailing how Natalie and Carter’s bodies had been posed by their killer. From AJC:

Natalie, who was found naked, was in a sexually suggestive position, and Carter, shirtless and wearing athletic shorts, was found with his arms stretched out in a cross-like position, according to police statements that accompanied the autopsy reports. Neither was wearing shoes.

Both teens were found on their backs in an empty parking space between their cars, Carter’s black Toyota Camry and Natalie’s Honda CRV.

The State is charging Hazelwood with 11 counts, including two counts of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated sexual battery, one count of identity fraud, two counts of misdemeanor theft by taking, and a single count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Magistrate Judge Karen Woodson bound the case over to the September 9 Fulton grand jury.

Hazelwood has not yet entered a plea but I’d bet we’ll likely see an insanity plea with this one.

New Details Emerge About What Possibly Happened to Brittanee Drexel

    Brittanee Drexel

A shocking new theory about what happened to Brittanee Drexel, the 17-year-old teenager who went missing from Myrtle Beach while on Spring Break in 2009, has emerged and the details are horrifying. If you aren’t familiar with Brittanee’s case, you can read my prior posts about her disappearance HERE.

According to newly released federal court transcripts from last week, FBI agent Gerrick Munoz said he believes Brittanee was abducted, gang-raped, shot to death and thrown into an alligator-infested swamp in the dense forests near McClellanville, South Carolina. His theory is based on a “jailhouse confession” from a prison inmate who says he was there when Brittanee was killed.

    From The Post and Courier:

In the transcript, Munoz testifies that the inmate, Taquan Brown of Walterboro, told investigators he went to a “stash house” in the McClellanville area in the days after Drexel was abducted. As he entered the house with a couple of other men, he saw Timothy Da’Shaun Taylor, then 16, “sexually abusing Brittanee Drexel,” the agent said.

He spotted others also in the room with the girl and Da’Shaun Taylor, and he kept walking through the house to the backyard to give some money to Da’Shaun Taylor’s father, Shaun Taylor.

As the two talked, Drexel ran from the house. She was “pistol-whipped” and taken back inside.

Two shots rang out and the inmate assumed Shaun Taylor shot the girl. Then the girl’s body was wrapped up and taken away.

As for what happened next, Munoz said that “several witnesses” have come forward and said that Brittanee’s body was disposed of in an alligator pit.

Munoz said the “stash house” as well as several alligator ponds have been searched, but they have not yet found Brittanee’s body.

Munoz also testified that since authorities held a press conference in June, when they pleaded with the people of McClellanville to speak up about what they know about Brittanee’s case, they’ve received some tips corroborating the jailhouse confession.

An additional inmate in the Georgetown County jail told investigators that he had secondhand information about what happened.

The Georgetown prisoner told authorities that Da’Shaun Taylor picked Drexel up in Myrtle Beach and took her to McClellanville. There he “showed her off, introduced her to some other friends that were there … they ended up tricking her out with some of their friends, offering her to them and getting a human trafficking situation,” the FBI agent testified.

By that point, the prisoner said, searches for the missing teen had generated massive media publicity. That created a problem for her abductors and she was “murdered and disposed of,” the agent told the court.

This new information from Munoz came out during a bond hearing for the now 25-year-old Da’Shaun Taylor, who is being charged with interference of interstate commerce by threat or violence for his involvement in a 2011 robbery of a Mount Pleasant McDonald’s restaurant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Winston Holliday told the judge during the hearing that Taylor is a suspect in Brittanee’s case.

Taylor has since been released on $10,000 bail, and his mother has spoken with reporters, maintaining her son’s innocence with regards to Brittanee.

No arrests have yet been made in Brittanee’s case. Read the below link for additional info.

Video Released of Dan Markel’s Ex-Wife Wendi Adelson Being Told About Dan’s Murder

New video has just been released in the Dan Markel case, showing the moment when Wendi Adelson, Markel’s ex-wife, was told about his murder. If you’re not familiar with this case, you might want to check out my prior posts about it HERE.

In the video, Wendi is at the police station in Tallahassee. She seems to be hanging on every word as the officer tells her that her ex-husband was shot and was taken to the hospital and that he’s not expected to survive.

She bursts into tears and starts sobbing into her hands.

She tells the officer that Markel “didn’t treat her very well” and that she’s “so scared” that someone did this thinking that it would be “good somehow.” She then says how her brother, Charlie Adelson, had been joking with her that he had looked into hiring a hitman but that a TV was cheaper and so he had gotten her a TV as a divorce present. She said that just that morning, a TV repair guy had come to her house and that she had repeated her brother’s joke about the TV being cheaper than a hitman.

When the officer asks her if she would ever ask anyone to kill Markel, she replies with, “not in a million years.”

She maintains that her family would “never do something like this.”

Given the fact that Markel was killed by hitmen (allegedly, of course, until it’s proven in court), this interview is eerie, to say the least. If Wendi didn’t have any knowledge of the murder beforehand, it’s interesting to watch her reaction because she immediately brings up her family, as though they are the first suspects that come to her mind.

And if she did have knowledge about the murder beforehand, I have to say that her acting is pretty darn good.

As of this moment, I think I might believe that she didn’t know. I mean, why in the world would she bring up her family to law enforcement if she did? You would think she would just tell police that she doesn’t know who would do this, instead of giving them a lead that would make them focus on her family.

Wendi also reportedly handed over her phone and gave them permission to search her computer.

Another interesting tidbit that came out in this latest release is that Wendi says she was on Dan’s street the very morning he was killed. From The Tallahassee Democrat:

Wendi Adelson drove on Trescott Drive around noon the day Markel was shot. She said she thought the road, which by that time was cordoned off by crime scene tape, was closed because of a downed tree.

She went around and bought a bottle of Bulleit Rye Whiskey from the ABC on Thomasville Road to take to a party later that evening.

Before that, she said she had been working at home after fielding the TV repair man that morning.

I have to admit that it’s a little coincidental that she was in the area after Markel had been shot – was she checking to see if the job had been done?

The Adelson family has maintained their innocence, and only time will tell if there will be additional arrests.
